If ever there was a day to shout about ending slavery, it would be today.

Around the world there are estimated to be 40 million slaves.

In the UK that number is around 136,000.

These are people, just like you and me.

People who like watching football.

People who enjoy chocolate.

People who like nothing more than a good chinwag with mates.

People who have degrees.

People who like animals.

People who are great at gaming.

People who love the fresh air.

Except right now, they can’t enjoy any of these freedoms.

They might not even be able to choose what to have for their dinner.

Slavery in the form of domestic servitude, forced labour on construction sites, farms, in car washes and nail bars, sexual exploitation, criminal activity and even organ harvesting has stolen their lives.

And they need us to speak out.

They need us to keep our eyes open and look for the signs of slavery everywhere we go.

Because slavery really is everywhere we go.

Find out more about the signs of slavery here.

And if you are at all worried, call the Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700.

Don’t let it be said that you were silent when they needed you.
